Why this recipe works
Convenience: You can enjoy a warm, toasty sandwich without the use of a stove, making it quick and perfect for those with busy schedules. Get the basic ingredients at the grocery store, or just check your pantry!
Ultimate comfort food: This air fryer pbj sandwich has a delightfully crisp exterior while maintaining a gooey and warm interior. It might just become your new favorite snack.
Versatility: Air frying easily adapts to your favorite types of bread, peanut butter and jelly, as well as to dietary restrictions or preferences. With so many different flavors of nut butters, jams and jellies, you are only limited by your imagination.
Ingredients
- Bread - we choose pre-sliced brioche bread. The slices are a little bit thicker than regular sandwich bread, so they hold up well in the air fryer. Other options include Texas toast, sourdough bread, white bread, whole wheat, and multigrain bread.
- Peanut butter - we went with a smooth peanut butter. You might like chunky peanut butter, or a different nut butter like cashew butter, or almond butter. If allergies are a concern, try sunflower seed butter.
- Jelly or Jam - your favorite jelly is what works here. We like strawberry jam, but you should choose what you like best.
- Butter - a soft spreadable salted butter is what we used. You can use something that comes in a tub, or let the butter soften at room temperature.

- After flipping the sandwich over, be sure to check in one minute intervals for the the perfect golden brown toasting.
- Cooking time may vary due to variations in ingredients used and air fryer settings.
Make it different
- Try adding slices of banana or strawberries for a fruitier sandwich.
- A sprinkle of mini chocolate chips makes for a decadent treat.
- A dash of cinnamon adds exotic flavor.
- Try cream cheese instead of nut butter for an allergy friendly version.
How to store
Place wrapped sandwiches in an airtight container or zipper bag in the refrigerator for a day or two.
Freeze wrapped sandwiches in a freezer safe container for up to one month.
Note: Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Reheating Leftovers
- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove wrapping from the sandwich.
- Heat for 1-2 minutes or until thoroughly warmed.
Common questions
Medium to thick slices of bread work best as they hold up well to the heat and provide a sturdy base for the peanut butter and jelly.
Typically, you should aim for 350°F for about 3-4 minutes. However, times may vary slightly based on your air fryer model.
No oil is needed, but you may use a non-stick spray or parchment paper if your air fryer tends to stick.
There's a chance if too much filling is used or if the sandwich isn't properly sealed. Always use a reasonable amount and press the edges of the bread together lightly.
The healthiness depends on your ingredients' quality and your overall diet. Using an air fryer doesn't add extra fat, unlike traditional frying.
